The Conservation of Vitality

The Law of Conservation of Energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed. Dr. Shirley Ley applies this principle to somatic healing, exploring how "trapped" or anxious energy can be metabolized into vitality. By using movement to transform a nervous charge into physical circulation, we can shift from a state of internal alarm to a sense of embodied strength and oxygenated flow.

Energy Cannot Be Destroyed, Only Transformed

If anxious energy keeps building up with nowhere to go, movement, not more willpower, is often what actually metabolizes it.

In physics, the Law of Conservation of Energy tells us that energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be transformed from one form to another. Lately, as I have practiced listening more closely to my body, I have begun to see this law in action within my own nervous system.

I can often feel when energy becomes built up or trapped. It manifests as a restless, internal sense that something is off. In the past, I would run with this feeling, letting the "charge" dictate my mood or my level of panic. Now, I rely on my internal coach to steady the frame. That voice reminds me that I have felt this before and nothing bad happened. It reassures me that even if something does arise, I will be present to address it.

While that coaching works on a cognitive level, it doesn't always resolve the physical presence of the energy itself. The charge is still there, sitting in my chest or my limbs, looking for a place to go.

Metabolizing the Charge Through Movement

Since I cannot destroy this energy, I have learned how to metabolize it. I have discovered that I can transform a sense of alarm into a sense of vitality simply by walking.

When I move, the interpretation of the energy shifts. After a walk, my heart is pumping and my limbs feel energized and warm. What felt like "anxiety" or "trapped air" is now transformed into the literal movement of life. It becomes the draining of my lymphatic system, the pumping of blood through my veins, and the intentional bringing of oxygen into my lungs.

The Charge Is No Longer a Threat — It's Fuel

This is the work of somatic integration. It is the realization that we do not always need to "calm down" or suppress what we feel. Sometimes, we simply need to give the energy a new direction. By moving our bodies, we allow the energy to finish its cycle, turning a moment of internal static into a state of flowing, oxygenated health.

Who This Is For

This reflection is for anyone navigating burnout, rage, and soul fatigue or the anxiety and self-doubt of a nervous system that feels perpetually on alert, looking for a way to work with that energy instead of against it. If this resonates, you're welcome to learn more about my approach.
